How to Identify and Remove Spyware
Itsie bitsie spyware went up the computer spout...
For the uninitiated, spyware are not something fun. Maybe they are fun for their makers but not for the owners of the computers that are infected by them. Why so? Spyware are harmless-looking programs that annoying pop up after downloading some innocent-looking program or files. They are sinister programs that acquire important information about the user. Those important info could either be personal or financial.
99% of the computers connected to the Internet are prone to being infested by these spyware programs. So, how does one identify and remove a spyware program? Read on and learn.
Knowing its form and symptoms
As a threat to the privacy of Internet users, a spyware takes different forms to fool the users. One of its forms is a spyware 'keylogger'. This program logs all the keys are user press, e.g., email addresses, URL's, usernames, passwords, and the worst -- credit card numbers.
A spyware also morphs into a browser hijacker or a browser helper object. Any activity on your browser can be trapped by this form of spyware. With this modus operandi, it can do the following:
- change the homepage of your browser
- track your clicked links, e.g., ads you visited
- take a screenshot of your system and send it to a remote location
Aside from a changed homepage, one can know that his or her PC is attached by spyware if the following symptoms are observed:
- ads that pop uncontrollably
- sudden slowing of the computer or any performance problem
Abating spyware
There are various anti-spyware programs that one can utilize to get rid of these pesky spyware. These programs include Mcafee, Microsoft, Lavasoft, Pest Control, ZeroSpyware, Spysweeper, etc. They can identify and remove the menacing spyware in varying rate. One can look for the best program that satisfies his or her taste. Some of these programs have interfaces that are more appealing than others. Others are judged according to their useability.
Of course, prevention is still better than cure, thus the importance of regular maintenance. Routinary scanning will avert the plaguing of these spyware.
Also, the consistent upgrading of one's current anti-spyware can help greatly in protecting the computer against the mutated forms of spyware.
The computer's security patches must be regularly updated, too. This will support the anti-spyware program. There are also upgraded versions of firewalls that can be installed to better ensure that one can keep the spyware at bay.
File trading programs such as Kazaa should not be installed. This is because they may carry adware and may even have virus that can cause your computer to crash.
Some may already be knowledgeable on how to detect the activities of a spyware. Getting rid of it is as easy as uninstalling it. However, to ensure that your PC does not get damaged, it is not advisable to just uninstall any spyware that one discovers. There are spyware that can damage a computer when removed improperly. Research must be done so that the spyware can be removed safely.
Another trick to keep one's PC spyware-free is to not succumb to impulsive downloading. There are a lot of applications there that disguise themselves as some useful programs when the truth is they are plain spyware. Be very cautious with your Internet activities. Visiting just any site will never be of help in your anti-spyware endeavor.
